Description

The Don Juan rose is a legendary climbing rose introduced by Italian breeder Malandrone in 1958. Widely considered one of the finest red climbers ever bred, it is celebrated for its deep, velvety crimson color, intense fragrance, and exceptional performance on trellises, arbors, and fences.

Characteristics

  • Color: Deep, velvety dark crimson red that retains its color without fading in hot sun.
  • Type: Large-Flowered Climber — produces long, sturdy canes that can reach 8 to 12 feet (2.4–3.6 m) in height.
  • Fragrance: Intensely strong, classic old-rose perfume with rich, sweet undertones.
  • Bloom Size: Large, averaging 4 to 5 inches (10–12 cm) wide with an elegant high-centered form.
  • Hardiness: USDA Zones 5–10.
  • Season: Continuous repeat-bloomer from late spring until the first hard frost.

Perfect For

  • Vertical gardening on pillars, trellises, fences, and walls.
  • Fragrant cut-flower arrangements due to its long, stiff stems and classic form.
  • Stunning focal points in sunny garden corners or near outdoor seating areas where its perfume can be enjoyed.

Care Tips

Plant in full sun with rich, well-draining soil. Train the long canes horizontally early on to encourage heavy flowering lateral shoots. Water deeply at the base, and prune in late winter or early spring by removing dead wood and trimming back the flowering side shoots to 2–3 buds.
