Description

Ausdark rose is an exceptional English shrub rose introduced in 1991. Named after the mysterious woman of William Shakespeare's sonnets, it is globally celebrated for its dark romantic coloring, relaxed growth habit, and strong fragrance.

Characteristics

  • Color: A dark crimson to fuchsia-purple, developing deep violet undertones as blooms mature.
  • Type: English Shrub Rose — grows into a loosely structured, spreading 3-to-4-foot frame.
  • Fragrance: Strong and complex; heavy, sweet Old Rose blended with distinct fruity notes.
  • Bloom Size: Large, averaging 3.5 to 4 inches wide with loose, peony-like rosettes.
  • Hardiness: USDA Zones 5–11.
  • Season: Prolific repeat-bloomer, flushing continuously from late spring until autumn frost.

Perfect For

  • Front borders where its shorter, spreading stature fits neatly beneath taller backdrop shrubs.
  • Cutting gardens as its heavy-headed, intricately petaled dark blossoms make striking indoor arrangements.
  • Partially shaded beds since its deep purple tones hold their depth beautifully without burning.

Care Tips

Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. Provide routine preventative care for black spots in humid areas. Water deeply at the base and prune back by one-third in late winter.
